Description

Dino Hodge moved to Darwin in April 1983, where he was based until moving to Alice Springs in 1998, and later relocating to Melbourne in 2000. Dino was originally employed as a social worker with the Department of Social Security, worked as executive officer of the Migrant Resource Centre (1985-1987), assistant regional director (NT) with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (1989-1992), and regional manager (central Australia) with the Commonwealth Department of Health (1998-2000).
Throughout the 1990s Dino was employed as a project officer or consultant with a wide range of organisations, including Corrugated Iron Youth Theatre, NT Community Writing Program, Brown's Mart Community Arts Project, NT Legal Aid Commission, NT Department of Education, NT Arts Industry Training Board, NT Trades and Labour Council, ATSIC, the Community Cultural Development Board (CCDB) of the Australia Council for the Arts, and the federal Department of Health, Housing, Local Government and Community Services.
Dino attended Darwin Community College, completing a Certificate in Translating/Interpreting (Greek) in 1985, and also Darwin Institute of Technology, completing a Graduate Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language (with a focus on Aboriginal language, learning and culture) in 1988. Dino was also employed as a tutor in literacy and numeracy at the Centre of Aboriginal and Islander Studies, and taught written communication skills at the Continuing Education Unit, both at Darwin Institute of Technology. In 1994, he developed and presented a unit on Social Justice for social work students at Northern Territory University.
While resident in the Northern Territory, Dino was active in several community organisations, including periods serving on the organising committee or board of management of Institute of Translators and Interpreters of the Northern Territory, Darwin Stonewall Collective, Darwin Greek Glenti, Brown's Mart Community Arts Project, Northern Territory AIDS Council, and the Northern Territory Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Rights.
Dino wrote articles for the 'Northern Territory News' about multiculturalism during his employment with the Migrant Resource Centre.

Dino also developed the play 'His Own Special Friend: A show on homosexual personalities and community development in Northern Territory history'. The play premiered at the Darwin Fringe Festival in June 1993, and an abridged version was presented at the inaugural 'QueerLit' conference for gay and lesbian writers in Sydney, NSW. It was also performed in Katherine at the inaugural Festival of One Act Plays (NT), together with a workshop conducted by the author for the local community on oral history. The show was adapted for broadcast on ABC Radio National's program 'Talking History' in January 1994, and re-worked for performance by Little Village Productions in New York City, USA, in June 1994 for the Cultural Festival as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Stonewall Riot.
